Benfleet Historical Society
- In 1926 a local philanthropist apparently provided a building to house a hose cart, a trailer pump and a converted Chevrolet car. Summoned by maroon, the senior officer would light a brand from the fire in the Anchor Inn, run across the back yard to the station opposite and light the maroon
