- DUNDALK had outgrown the town's first fire station, according to a report published in September, 1971, and there was an urgent need to build a new station to cope with the town's growing population and stature.

At the time that the report was published the fire service was operating out of a single shed which had the capacity to house just one fire engine. This station was located in Market Street adjacent to houses that were provided for firemen.

The Council set about finding a location after the publication of the report and the new station would needed to cater for four engines. It was estimated that it would cost 100,000 to build.
